I think your mid-side decision helps make that shiny sound more of the focal point, but it makes the track sound too harsh to me at the same time, as the mids may have been congested but they helped to counterbalance the strident sound on top. But regardless, I do think you did a good job leading into the discussion of mid-side eq, the flow and pacing is good.

Thanks as always for your support! Fair point - I also thought the top end was a bit harsh, but I didn't bother trying to tame it because it was peripheral to what I was trying to demonstrate. So hard to pack everything in to one video 😅

Another great video. Would love to see how to approach dealing with phasing issues when using samples for ambient since (in my experience at least) many sound great in stereo but collapse to mono terribly.

Thanks again for watching! As I mentioned in my other comment to you, I think it's an unavoidable trade-off - ambient music isn't really ambient when you collapse it to mono because of all the stereo effects. In order to ensure maximum mono compatibility, you'd really need to avoid using any stereo instruments or effects, with the trade-off being that it won't sound as lush as a big wide stereo track. I might do a video analyzing some popular ambient tracks to hear what they sound like when collapsed to mono - I imagine it will be a mixed bag!

@holosuitemastering thanks for taking the time to reply and indulging my ignorance when it comes to this. Would definitely be interested in seeing how popular ambient songs sound in mono.
I guess I assumed that you should always be going for mono compatibility but maybe this is less important with ambient since folks that listen to it are likely not listening on a mono speaker.

@@11sveden12 I definitely agree that mono compatibility is best, but yeah there's a point where you make things so mono compatible that it loses its vibe
